Municipalities (Spanish: Municipios) are the administrative divisions under the states of Mexico according to the constitution. Municipalities are considered as the second-level administrative divisions by the federal government. However, some state regulations have designed intrastate regions to administer their own municipalities.

The state with the highest number of municipalities is Oaxaca, with 570, and the state with the lowest number is Baja California Sur, with only five. [10] There are 16 boroughs in Mexico City. These sums up to 2,476 division units.
The municipality of Churintzio is located in northern Michoacán at an altitude between 1,700 and 2,500 metres (5,600–8,200 ft). It borders the municipalities of Ecuandureo to the west, La Piedad to the north, Zináparo to the northeast, Penjamillo to the southeast, and Tlazazalca to the south. [6]
It was a pre-Hispanic population, and it was first recognized by the Spanish government in 1613. In 1822, Zináparo was a community of muleteers and farmers. In 1863, it became a municipality, being added to La Piedad district. In 1894, it lost its municipal status under a territorial law issued that year.
