A snout is the protruding portion of an animal's face, consisting of its nose, mouth, and jaw. In many animals, the structure is called a muzzle , [ 1 ] rostrum , beak or proboscis . The wet furless surface around the nostrils of the nose of many mammals is called the rhinarium (colloquially this is the "cold wet snout" of some mammals).
The nasal bones are two small oblong bones, varying in size and form in different individuals; they are placed side by side at the middle and upper part of the face and by their junction, form the bridge of the upper one third of the nose. Each has two surfaces and four borders.
The term derives from Latin nasus for "nose" and labium for "lip". Other people suggest the term melolabial fold , [ clarification needed ] [ 4 ] or the lip-cheek fold or groove. [ 5 ] It is also known as the nasolabial sulcus .
