Lake Elsinore is a city in western Riverside County, California, United States.Established as a city in 1888, it is on the shore of Lake Elsinore, a natural freshwater lake about 3,000 acres (1,200 ha) in size.
Lake Elsinore is the largest natural freshwater lake in Southern California.With its own 750-mi 2 (1,900-km 2) watershed, it is situated at the lowest point within the San Jacinto River watershed of 750 sq mi (1,900 km 2) [clarification needed], at the terminus of the San Jacinto River.
It was established in 1887, in the Warm Springs Valley northwest of the town of Lake Elsinore, and later incorporated into the City of Lake Elsinore. Coal, along with clay deposits, was found on the site by John D. Huff in the late 1880s, and the Southern California Coal and Clay Company was formed to mine them.
