In 2010–11, Miami Northwestern received a "B" on the School Accountability Report, the highest grade ever received by an inner-city school in Miami-Dade County. [ 5 ] [ 6 ] This improvement has been attributed in part to a major overhaul in school staff, and to an increased focus on college readiness and college-level courses. [ 5 ]
In 2009 the MDCPS school board voted for the name of this school, considering the Mournings and former Attorney General of the United States Janet Reno. [3] The school was named after the Mournings due to their assistance to the area schools; some members of the Cuban community in Miami disliked Reno as they disagreed with her handling of the Elian Gonzalez case.

The school opened in 1950 for the education of white students only. [3] [4] High school students had been moved from the previous campus, Ponce de Leon High School. The new Coral Gables High retained the school yearbook name, Caveleon, and the school mascot, "Cavaliers". [5] Ponce de Leon High School became Ponce de Leon Junior High School. [6]
