The original hospital on the site was established as an infirmary for the local workhouse in February 1864. [1] Additions included a medical wing in 1903, a children's wing in 1925 and a 74-bed annexe in 1926. [1] In 1929 it became known as the Queen's Park Institution, a name which evolved to become the Queen's Park Hospital. [1]
The Blackburn Royal Infirmary (BRI), was decommissioned in July 2006, after a new hospital building was built at the existing Queens Park Hospital (QPH) site in the town, formerly a Workhouse, [13] so to merge the two sites into a single hospital for Blackburn, which had been planned since September 1996. [14]
As part of a plan to rationalise acute and tertiary healthcare in the local area, most of the services transferred to the Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital in July 2006, and the infirmary site was sold to Barratt Developments. [2] The War Memorial Wing was demolished in February 2015. [4]

In May 2023, it was announced that a new hospital intended to replace Royal Preston will be built in 2030. [14] [15] The new hospital facility will be on a different site to the existing location. [16] As of December 2023 the trust is still selecting a site, all shortlisted locations are in South Ribble.
