I just had a fiber optic cable installed at my home ("Sonic Gigabit Fiber"), which terminates in a modem which converts the fiber-optic signal to a high-speed broadband Internet connection. This modem is then connected to a wifi router (via a Cat5-E ethernet cable), and the router then puts out a wifi network.
Have been using CenturyLink cable modem (telephone line) which topped out at 1.5 mbs. Feed is into my garage, from which it goes underground thru Cat 6 in buried conduit to house and guest house, each with a Time Capsule. Do not need a wireless modem at fiber connection b/c of Time Capsules. Do I need a new or special modem at fiber connection ...
Old iPad unable to connect to fiber optic network. Interesting. I’ve not met a Lightning to Fiber Optic adapter, though stranger adapters probably also exist. But seriously… If you’re trying to connect from an old iPad to a Wi-Fi network that happens to have a fiber optic link to the internet, the internet link is not relevant.
The AirPort Extreme was designed in 2012 to connect to standard Cable and DSL type connections. Fiber was largely unknown at the time that the AirPort Extreme was designed. For that reason, Apple makes no mention of fiber cabability in the specifications or setup instructions for the AirPort Extreme.

The fiber optic cable comes into my house to a telephone box And that "box" is no doubt an ONT, or it contains an ONT. There is one in every fibre network that I've ever seen.
I don't have ATT service and my 360 Mbps Comcast service to my own DOCSIS v3.1 cable modem (Mot MB8611) or my Synology RT6600ax router — has not slowed after Sequoia v15 or v15.1 upgrade from the preceding Sonoma 14.7.1 on my M2 Mac Mini Pro with a Wi-Fi 6 connection.
So I finally upgraded to a gigabit internet connection. I had previously rewired my house with quality Cat 6 cables to I was curious to know how good a job I did. My internet setup is a direct fiber optic line from the node to the ISP gateway/modem (in passthrough mode) to the AirPort Extreme serving as the router/DHCP server and WiFi access point.
