Peter Edwards (1934 – 2017) and Gunvor Edwards (1934 – 2014) were two Swedish-English impressionistic artists who illustrated several of The Railway Series books by the Rev. W. Awdry from 1963 to 1972. Gunvor died at the age of 80 on 23 April 2014 from dementia, and Peter died at the age of 83 on 3 April 2017 from cancer.

Spong is a graduate of Leicester College of Art, like John T. Kenney and Clarence Reginald Dalby, who were among the earlier illustrators of the Railway Series books.He remained the illustrator throughout the run of Christopher Awdry's 14 books, illustrating more titles in the series than any other artist.
He was replaced by John T. Kenney as illustrator. Dalby, a Leicester man, was also the creator of the original trademark polar bear on Fox's Glacier Mints. [8] Fox's was a firm based in Leicester, which was also home to the Railway Series publishers Edmund Ward. [9] Dalby died in 1983, aged 79, following a short illness.
