Locks of Love was founded by Madonna W. Coffman on May 28, 1997. [1] [2] Coffman was a registered nurse who had suffered from alopecia in her twenties. Coffman's daughter also had alopecia and lost all her hair at the age 4. Locks of Love received a determination of its 501(c)(3) status from the Internal Revenue Service in December 1997. [7]
Rosalie Robles, age 5, donated 11 inches of hair to Locks of Love. Her mom, Sarah Panto, did the same, back in 1999, using the same hairdresser.
