The most common ATF forms for NFA firearms are the ATF Form 1, ATF Form 3, and ATF Form 4. Here’s what these forms are used for: ATF Form 1: Required for the manufacture of a firearm or suppressor; ATF Form 3: Required for transfers between licensed dealers and/or manufacturers
NFA WAIT TIME / FORM 3 & 4 APPROVAL TIME FRAMES. The approval dates on this page accurately reflect time frames based on data from our 42 FFL locations nationwide. Understanding these dates can help Capitol Armory customers estimate the arrival of their NFA approvals, based on when their NFA forms were submitted to the ATF.
AFT Form 3 Wait Times. Fortunately, ATF Form 3 wait times aren’t nearly as long as Form 4 waits. When electronically filed by the transferring FFL, the ATF is processing Form 3’s in under a week. However, old fashioned paper Form 3’s are taking around 6 months!
Welcome to ATF's eForms. ATF's eForms allows individuals and members of the firearms industry to file certain forms electronically rather than via paper applications. The electronic filing is designed to be more efficient and accurate and will allow ATF to process the submissions more efficiently.
Currently receiving approvals from applications submitted: Individual Electronic Form 4 — Avg. 17.5 Days; Range: 0-82 days. Electronic Form 4 Trust/Corp — Avg. 68 Days; Range: 1-279 Days. Form 3 — 1-4 days from submission.
NFA applications begin processing when the applicable form is entered into the National Firearms Registration Transfer Records database (NFRTR), at which point the application enters a “Pending” status until reviewed by an ATF Legal Instruments Examiner.
However, the good news regarding the Form 3 is that processing and turnaround time for the ATF paperwork is generally very fast (a matter of a couple of days). If both FFLs are also SOTs, then they have already paid their tax to deal with NFA firearms.
