Noirmoutier-en-l'Île (French pronunciation: [nwaʁmutje ɑ̃ l‿il]), commonly referred to as Noirmoutier, is a commune located in the northern part of the island of Noirmoutier, just off the coast of the Vendée department in the Pays de la Loire region in western France.
Noirmoutier was the location of an early Viking raid in 799, when raiders attacked the monastery of Saint Philibert of Jumièges. [2]The Vikings established a permanent base on the island around 824, from which they could control southeast Brittany by the 840s.
The isle of Noirmoutier encloses and shelters the bay and gives it a milder climate. It shares the relatively sunny exposure of the area south of the Loire. At Moutiers en Retz, July and August (22°C) are the warmest months and January (8°C) the coldest. [4] Summers are relatively dry. In winter, snow is infrequent as are periods of intense cold.

Pomone was a 40-gun frigate of the French Navy, launched in 1785.The British captured her off the Île de Batz in April 1794 and incorporated her into the Royal Navy.
