St. Mary's on the Flats, originally known as the Church of Our Lady of the Lake, [1]: 34–35 [2]: 8 was the first Catholic church building in Cleveland, Ohio.The location where the church once stood can be found, in an 1881 atlas, [3] at the south-east corner of Columbus Ave. and then Girard Ave. on the east bank of the Cuyahoga river in the flats.

The congregation was founded in 1881 as a mission of Ohio City, Cleveland's St. Mary's on-the-Flats to serve a growing German immigrant population on Cleveland's west side. The original church and school building were constructed in 1883 but burned on June 29, 1891, while the new building was under construction.
A small group of Irish settlers established St. Mary's of the Flats in 1826. The congregation met in several locations before beginning construction on its own sanctuary in 1837. [1] When Pope Pius IX established the Diocese of Cleveland in 1847, he named Louis Amadeus Rappe as its first bishop.
The church is a longstanding city landmark; George Francis Houck, then the Chancellor, wrote in 1903 that, "One of the landmarks of the city and Diocese of Cleveland is St. Peter's Church." [2]: 276 It is listed as a Cleveland Designated Landmark. [1] It is also a named feature in the Geographic Names Information System. [4]

The first post office in Cleveland—which was named Cowansville at that time—was established on 18 March 1831 with John Cowan the first postmaster. On 7 January 1856, prior to the US Civil War and the completion of the Western Carolina Railroad, the town was renamed to Rowan Mills.
