The new alignment would eliminate more than 45 curves and nearly 6 miles (9.7 km) between Spokane and Chewelah; it would cost $1.3 million to construct (equivalent to $10.8 million in 2023 dollars) [19] and use funding from the federal government. [20] Construction began in October 1957 and the new highway opened to traffic on November 10, 1959.
