Chewelah (/ tʃ ə ˈ w iː l ə / chə-WEE-lə) is a city in Stevens County, Washington, United States. It is located approximately 45 mi (72 km) northwest of Spokane . The population was 2,470 at the 2020 census .

Stevens County is a county located in the U.S. state of Washington along the Canada–US border.At the 2020 census, its population was 46,445. [1] As of July 2023, the population was estimated to be 48,837.
The base is at an elevation of 3,923 feet (1,196 m) above sea level with the summit at 5,774 feet (1,760 m) on Chewelah Mountain, yielding a vertical drop of 1,851 feet (564 m). Its slopes are primarily north-facing and are served by six chairlifts - one quad, one high-speed detachable quad, and four doubles.
The 83-mile (134 km) Chewelah–Waneta–Columbia Gardens common route and eastern fork was a section of the original Spokane Falls and Northern Railway and Nelson and Fort Sheppard Railway. In 1899, the Great Northern Railway (GN) acquired these two railways.

The high flow period of the river occurs due to the melting of the previous winter snowpack in the spring. This combined with spring rainfall makes April usually the highest month for discharge. Just over half of this discharge comes from three tributaries of the Colville River: Chewelah Creek, Little Pend Oreille River, and Mill Creek. [5]
