I experienced the same issue (installation stuck at 97% - AVG starting only in passive mode telling that there is an older version installed) and AVG support just managed to fix it via remote.
I want the "AVG Antivirus free" edition, but the downloaded version is "AVG Internet Security" (see screen print below). However it seems to work O.K., even though the "my subscription" option in "my AVG" says that it expires on January 1 1970.
