Bromoethane, also known as ethyl bromide, is a chemical compound of the haloalkanes group. It is abbreviated by chemists as EtBr (which is also used as an abbreviation for ethidium bromide ). This volatile compound has an ether-like odor.
Up to date, it has been prepared by three prevailingly ineffective methods: From salts of fluoroacetic acid using a Hunsdiecker type of reaction.; From dibromofluoromethane by reductive debromination with a Swarts reagent.
1,1,2,2-Tetrabromoethane, or simply tetrabromoethane (TBE), is a halogenated hydrocarbon, chemical formula C 2 H 2 Br 4.Although three bromine atoms may bind to one of the carbon atoms creating 1,1,1,2-tetrabromoethane this is not thermodynamically favorable, so in practice tetrabromoethane is equal to 1,1,2,2-tetrabromoethane, where each carbon atom binds two bromine atoms.
2-Phenylethyl bromide is an organobromide with the formula C 6 H 5 CH 2 CH 2 Br. It is a colorless liquid, although older samples appear yellow. Analogous to the preparation of most 1-bromoalkanes, it is prepared by free-radical addition of hydrogen bromide to styrene.
