Coastal Speedway 0.500-mile dirt oval Myrtle Beach, South Carolina: 1956–1957 Replaced by Myrtle Beach Speedway. Now a commercial district. Columbia Speedway: 0.500-mile dirt oval Columbia, South Carolina: Arclite 200 (1962)
During the race itself, Richard Petty, who at the time was known best for his skill on short tracks, led 184 of the 200 laps (a Daytona 500 record that stands to this day) and Chrysler teams took four of the top five spots. [2] First Daytona 500 starts for Bobby Isaac, Doug Cooper, Johnny Rutherford, Jack Anderson, Jim Bray, and Neil Castles. [2]
In addition to NASCAR and IMSA, the track also hosts races of ARCA, AMA Superbike, SCCA, and AMA Supercross. The track features multiple layouts including the primary 2.500 mi (4.023 km) high-speed tri-oval , a 3.560 mi (5.729 km) sports car course, a 2.950 mi (4.748 km) motorcycle course, and a 1,320 ft (400 m) karting and motorcycle flat-track.
The track in its current form is measured at 2.000 miles (3.219 km), with 18 degrees of banking in the turns, 12 degrees of banking on the frontstretch, and five degrees of banking on the backstretch. [1] Numerous road track layouts exist within the track's infield and outside the track's confines.
In addition, the Charlotte Motor Speedway complex features numerous adjacent tracks, including a 1 ⁄ 5 mile (0.32 km) clay short track, a 2 ⁄ 5 mile (0.64 km) dirt track, and a 1 ⁄ 4 mile (0.40 km) long drag strip. The main track also features an infield road course that is used with the oval to make a "roval".
The track followed the edge of the hillside to two uphill right-hand turns, over an exciting blind crest into a right-hand turn, down and up into a left-hand turn rejoining the old track. The new layout measured 3.377 miles (5.435 km); with its intrinsic link to the Formula One race, it became known colloquially as the Grand Prix Circuit .
