The State Theatre is an historic theatre in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. It is one of four restored theatres in the Hennepin Theatre District. [1] It is one of four restored theaters on Hennepin Avenue, along with the Orpheum Theatre, [2] the Pantages Theatre, and the Shubert Theatre (now The Cowles Center). The theatre seats 2,181.
In 1915, The Shubert began to play movies, accompanied by a 40-piece pit orchestra. In 1918 the flu epidemic closed all Minneapolis theaters. The Shubert remodeled; new lights were installed, the orchestra pit was expanded, and the theater was repainted. Throughout the 1920s the prevalence and popularity of films began to push out live theater.
The nearby State Theatre had been renovated and reopened in 1991, but the Orpheum had a deeper stage that would allow larger sets needed for shows such as Miss Saigon, which was scheduled to open on January 14, 1994. The city agreed to finance the renovation, issuing bonds to be paid back with a $2 surcharge on tickets for the Orpheum and State.
The new performing arts center is a three-building complex that includes the renovated Shubert Theatre building (renamed the Goodale Theater) and a new glass-walled atrium connecting the two historic buildings and serving them both as a common lobby. The Cowles Center hosted a three-day Grand Opening Gala September 9–11, 2011.

In the mid-1990s, the Jewelers Exchange Building on 1st Avenue was also torn down. The only structures occupying the block were the Shubert Theater and an elevated billboard. The Shubert was moved a block north to a site adjacent to the Hennepin Center for the Arts by the Minnesota Shubert Performing Arts and Education Center in February 1999. [4]
