Novi continues to be one of the fastest-growing cities in Michigan. The construction of Twelve Oaks Mall in 1977 made the city a major shopping destination in the Detroit metropolitan area and is often credited with ushering in an era of growth that lasted for 40 years (although, in fact, the community had been growing rapidly since the 1950s).
In 1826, Joseph Yerkes, his sons William and John, and members of their family moved from Romulus, New York to Michigan and purchased land around Novi and Northville. One of those family members was Joseph D. Yerkes, the eldest son of William Yerkes. Joseph D. Yerkes was born in New York in 1819, and helped his father farm upon coming to Michigan.
Novi Township is a civil township of Oakland County in the U.S. state of Michigan. At the 2020 census , the township had a population of 160. [ 3 ] Of the original 36-square-mile (93 km 2 ) survey township , only a small portion of 0.11 square miles (0.28 km 2 ) remains unincorporated from the surrounding city of Novi .
The Fuerst sisters sold their 160 acres of land to the city of Novi in the 1970s for a token amount, retaining a life lease on this five-acre farmstead parcel. The Fuerst sisters both died in 1991. [5] The farm was demolished in 2008 [2] and the property redeveloped into Fuerst Park. [3]
