The official currency of the British Virgin Islands has been the United States dollar (US$) since 1959, the currency also used by the United States Virgin Islands. Since the restoration of democracy in the British Virgin Islands in 1950, only a comparatively small number of persons have been elected to political office. Although elections are held approximately every three or four years, the small size of the legislative body [1] and the tendency to return incumbent politicians [2] has resulted in a relatively small aggregate number.
The British Virgin Islands legislature is the House of Assembly. Prior to the adoption of the new constitution in 2007 the legislature was called the Legislative Council. General elections are conducted every four years (unless the House is dissolved earlier, either as a result of a vote of no confidence or otherwise).

The House of Assembly of the British Virgin Islands, until 2007 known as the Legislative Council, [1] has 15 members: 13 directly elected for four-year terms (nine in single-seat constituencies and four "at large"), and two ex officio members (the Attorney General and a Speaker chosen from outside the house).
The Cabinet of the British Virgin Islands (formerly referred to as the Executive Council, or sometimes ExCo) is the collective decision-making body of the British Virgin Islands government. It is composed of the Premier , four other Ministers of Government, and the Attorney General as an ex officio , non-voting, member. [ 1 ]
The Gazette has been published in Tortola since 9 March 1967 under the provisions of Section 2 of the Interpretation and General Clauses Act 1955.It replaced The Antigua, Montserrat and Virgin Islands Official Gazette which was published in Antigua for the then West Indies Federation.
