Lydiard Park was the home of the St John family from 1420 until 1940. In 1943, the local authority, the Corporation of Swindon, bought the then dilapidated house and its overgrown park from the estate trustees. The estate now belongs to Swindon Borough Council, the successor of the Corporation.
The house was demolished in the early 1930s, and in 1935 its stable block was converted to a house, also called Compton Bassett House. [2] In 2021 the house, with seven bedrooms, staff accommodation, helicopter hangar and 71 acres, was offered for sale at £6.75 million. [10]
Subsequent to this, the house remained empty until it was occupied by British and American forces during World War II. Damaged by the military, it was bought from The Crown by Swindon Corporation in 1947 for £16,000. The sale included 53 acres (210,000 m 2) of land, the manor house and the adjacent Holy Rood Church.
