Muirfield is a privately owned golf links which is the home of The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers. Located in Gullane , East Lothian , Scotland, overlooking the Firth of Forth , Muirfield is one of the golf courses used in rotation for The Open Championship .
The Honourable Company of Edinburgh golfers built their own course at Muirfield and Musselburgh was removed from the rota as a result. [7] Royal St George's Golf Club became the first course outside Scotland to host the championship in 1894. [8] Royal Liverpool Golf Club hosted the event for the first time in 1897.
The Old Course at St Andrews is considered by many to be the "home of golf" because the sport was first played on the links at St Andrews in the early 15th century. [8] Golf was becoming increasingly popular in Scotland until James II of Scotland banned the game in 1457 because he felt that young men were playing too much golf instead of practising their archery.
