In 1935, an entire section of US 41 between Chicago and Waukegan was realigned to a new alignment. The new alignment closely matched the current routing of US 41. When the system was created on November 11, 1926, [2] US 41 was the only US Highway routed along the alignment of M-15, and US 41 extended north to Copper Harbor. The original map showed US 41 following an unbuilt alignment between Powers and Marquette. [11] The new US 41 designation was instead routed to follow the former M-15. [27]
In 1934, the state sign route system was established, and Sign Route 41 was designated along Route 125 from Yosemite south and southwest to Cholame and then west through Paso Robles to Cambria via Legislative Route 33. [14] The part of Route 125 southwest of Cholame instead became part of the new U.S. Route 466. [15]
