Perth railway station is the largest station on the Transperth network, serving the central business district of Perth, Western Australia. It serves as an interchange between the Airport , Armadale , Ellenbrook, Fremantle , Midland , and Thornlie lines as well as Transwa 's Australind service.
The railway was operable as far east as Perth station by 9 October 1880 and on 1 March 1881, the railway was officially opened between Fremantle and Guildford by Governor William Robinson. [9] The initial timetable was five trains per day from Fremantle, two terminating at Perth and three terminating at Guildford.
The remaining stations between Perth and Joondalup opened on 21 March 1993, [10] and an extension to Currambine station opened on 8 August 1993. [11] Subiaco station was rebuilt in the late 1990s, opening on 12 December 1998 as Perth's first underground station. In the following year the Midland Railway Company opened a line from Perth to Walkaway, which connected with the Government line to Geraldton, 424 km north of Perth.
