Newport is located at the confluence of the Little Vermilion and Wabash rivers along Indiana State Road 63, about halfway between the county's north and south borders. According to the 2010 census, Newport has a total area of 0.87 square miles (2.25 km 2 ), all land.
The Vermillion County Courthouse, located at 255 S. Main St. in Newport, is the seat of government of Vermillion County, Indiana. The courthouse was built from 1923 to 1925 to replace the previous courthouse, which burned down in 1923. Architect John B. Bayard designed the building in the Classical Revival style.
Vigo County was formed in 1818 and included the area that later became Parke and Vermillion counties. In 1821, Parke County was formed, and on January 2, 1824, the Indiana General Assembly created Vermillion County out of Parke County; the act took effect on February 1.
