The 54th Pioneer Infantry arrived at the port of New York on 26 June 1919 on the troopship USS Artemis and was demobilized on 8 July 1919 at Camp Grant, Illinois. It was reorganized as the 71st Infantry, New York National Guard, in 1919–20, with the regimental headquarters federally recognized on 30 January 1920 at New York City.
