Forrest County is a county located in the U.S. state of Mississippi.As of the 2020 census, the population was 78,158. [2] Its county seat and largest city is Hattiesburg. [3] The county was created from Perry County in 1908 and named in honor of Nathan Bedford Forrest, a Confederate general in the American Civil War and the first Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan.
Hattiesburg is the 5th most populous city in the U.S. state of Mississippi, located primarily in Forrest County (where it is the county seat and most populous city) [4] and extending west into Lamar County.
Elections are limited to once every four years. Any new county must be at least 400 square miles (1,000 km 2), with no existing county reduced below that size. [2] The county governing body, known as the Board of Supervisors, is located under the judicial branch of state government as established in the 1817 Mississippi Constitution. [3]
