rfind(string, substring) returns integer Description Returns the position of the start of the last occurrence of substring in string. If the substring is not found most of these routines return an invalid index value – -1 where indexes are 0-based, 0 where they are 1-based – or some value to be interpreted as Boolean FALSE. A substring of a string is a prefix of a suffix of the string, and equivalently a suffix of a prefix; for example, nan is a prefix of nana, which is in turn a suffix of banana. If is a substring of , it is also a subsequence, which is a more general concept.

Simple single-letter substitution ciphers are examples of (ε-free) string homomorphisms. An example string homomorphism g uc can also be obtained by defining similar to the above substitution: g uc (‹a›) = ‹A›, ..., g uc (‹0›) = ε, but letting g uc be undefined on punctuation chars. Examples for inverse homomorphic images are
A string s is said to be a substring or factor of t if there exist (possibly empty) strings u and v such that t = usv. The relation "is a substring of" defines a partial order on Σ *, the least element of which is the empty string.

In computer science, a substring index is a data structure which gives substring search in a text or text collection in sublinear time. Once constructed from a document or set of documents, a substring index can be used to locate all occurrences of a pattern in time linear or near-linear in the pattern size, with no dependence or only logarithmic dependence on the document size.
