Galway was born in North Belfast as one of two brothers. His father, who played the flute, was employed at the Harland & Wolff shipyard until the end of the Second World War and spent night-shifts cleaning buses after the war, while his mother, a pianist, was a winder in a flax-spinning mill.
From 1875 to 1881 Schwedler played at the Stadttheater Düsseldorf. In 1881 he joined the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra as principal flutist and remained there until 1917. [4] In 1886, Johannes Brahms conducted the Leipzig premiere of his Fourth Symphony, and praised Schwedler's playing of the famous fourth movement flute solo.

At the age of 22, Bennett started working in his first principal flute position in the BBC Northern Orchestra (now the BBC Philharmonic).
