After years of delays caused by community opposition and financial difficulties, the arena broke ground in March 2010 and opened in September 2012. The Nets officially changed their names to the Brooklyn Nets on April 30, 2012, and the move was made official. The Nets thus became Brooklyn's first major league sports team in 55 years.
The 2023–24 Brooklyn Nets season was the 48th season of the franchise in the National Basketball Association (NBA), 57th season overall, and its 12th season playing in the New York City borough of Brooklyn.
For the 2018 season, the club moved its home matches to the Aviator Sports and Events Center in Brooklyn. [2] In 2019, the Club moved to the Dyker Heights campus of Poly Prep Country Day School. [3] In 2021, the club played the majority of their home games at Calvert Vaux Park, though their first home game was played at Central Park's Field #2. [4]
During the first season of the merger (1976–77), the Nets continued to play on Long Island, although Erving's contract had by then been sold to the Philadelphia 76ers. The Nets transferred to New Jersey then next season and became known as the New Jersey Nets, and later moved to Brooklyn prior to the 2012–13 NBA season.
New York has two National Basketball Association teams, the New York Knicks in Manhattan, and the Brooklyn Nets in Brooklyn. New York has one Major League Soccer team: New York City FC. Although the New York Red Bulls represent the New York metropolitan area they play in Sports Illustrated Stadium, located in Harrison, New Jersey.
