An eccentric is a cylindrical plug or bearing cup that fits into an enlarged bottom bracket shell. The plug is machined to accept a typical bottom bracket, but offset from the center of the plug, so that by rotating the plug, the location of the bottom bracket (and hence the chain tension) may be adjusted (fore and aft to tension the chain, the ...
Bottom bracket wrench for newer bottom bracket styles Crank extractor. A chain tool or chain splitter is used to 'break' a chain, in order to remove it from a bike or remove links, or to put a chain back together. A crank extractor is used to pull the crank off the bottom bracket spindle. A pedal wrench removes the pedals from the bicycle. It ...
Press fit is achieved with presses that can press the parts together with very large amounts of force. The presses are generally hydraulic , although small hand-operated presses (such as arbor presses ) may operate by means of the mechanical advantage supplied by a jackscrew or by a gear reduction driving a rack and pinion .
The headset cartridge bearings therefore sit somewhat loosely in the headtube of the bicycle (as opposed to being press fit). During use, the bearings, under thrust loads, will rock in their seats and will easily damage the softer frame material (often aluminum , although some titanium frames are manufactured for integrated headsets).
Even newer designs have the bottom bracket spindle, usually hollow and larger diameter than is possible for bottom brackets with bearings held inside the bottom bracket shell of a bike frame, for reduced weight and increased stiffness, permanently attached to the right crank (Shimano and others) or the left crank (Race Face).
Bicycle pedals are left-threaded on the left-hand crank so that precession tightens the pedal rather than loosening it. This may seem counter-intuitive since the pedals rotate in the direction that would unscrew them from the cranks, but the torque exerted due to the precession is several orders of magnitude greater than that caused by bearing friction or even a jammed pedal bearing.
Engineering fits are generally used as part of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing when a part or assembly is designed. In engineering terms, the "fit" is the clearance between two mating parts, and the size of this clearance determines whether the parts can, at one end of the spectrum, move or rotate independently from each other or, at the other end, are temporarily or permanently joined.
Press tools are commonly used in hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical presses to produce the sheet metal components in large volumes. Generally press tools are categorized by the types of operation performed using the tool, such as blanking, piercing , bending , forming , forging , trimming etc.
