Christ Church — known also as Christ Church, Washington Parish or Christ Church on Capitol Hill — is a historic Episcopal church located at 620 G Street SE in Washington, D.C., USA. [3] The church is also called Christ Church, Navy Yard , because of its proximity to the Washington Navy Yard and the nearby U.S. Marine Barracks .
Holy Comforter-St. Cyprian is a Black Catholic parish in Washington, D.C. established in 1966 by the merger of the predominately African-American St. Cyprian Catholic Church (est 1893) and the predominantly White Holy Comforter Catholic Church (est 1904). [1] [2] The church is located at 1357 East Capitol Street in Southeast DC.
A cemetery originally occupied what is now the site of the 1851 church and the Lower School. [1] This informal burying ground was established long before Holy Trinity Church bought its land. [8] In June 1796, an additional 20 feet (6.1 m) of land west of the church was purchased, and by 1798 the church owned all the ground west to 36th Street. [9]
The church is a contributing property to the Downtown Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Radical renovations to the sanctuary in 1994 witnessed the removal and subsequent destruction of the church's original high altar, communion rail, consecration stones, and some artwork.
The church was formally established March 1, 1845, and the territory of St. John's was split between the two churches. While the church raised funds to construct a building, the members met in a schoolhouse on 9th Street. Parishioner Martha Burnes was the owner of 600 acres of Washington real estate, which she had inherited.
