The Cardinal Greenway is the longest rail-trail in Indiana and spans 62 miles from Marion through Muncie to Richmond in East Central Indiana. The trail starts in Richmond, travels through Wayne , Randolph , Henry , Delaware , and Grant counties, and ends in the town of Converse at the border between Grant and Miami Counties.

The Rivergreenway consists of 26-miles [1] of connected trails through a linear park following alongside or near the City's three rivers: St. Joseph River, St. Marys River, and Maumee River. In 2009, the Rivergreenway was designated as a National Recreation Trail. [2] [3] The trail network also connects to the Wabash & Erie Canal Towpath Trail.
The trail that runs through the preserve is about 3 1/2 miles in length and is a loop trail. The trailhead begins in the parking lot for trail No. 10 in Shades State Park.
The primary feature in the preserve is the "Devils Backbone," a 100-foot-high stone ridge barely wide enough for the trail to cross. The preserve was the first dedicated nature preserve in Indiana, and was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1968 under the name "Pine Hills Natural Area." [4]
Construction of the trail was partially funded by Federal grant money awarded to the state of Indiana.
