The Minor Basilica and Parish of San Sebastian, [a] also known as the Shrine of Our Lady of Mount Carmel [citation needed] and commonly known as San Sebastian Church [b] or San Sebastian Basilica, is a minor basilica of the Roman Catholic Church in Manila, Philippines. It is under the jurisdiction of the Archdiocese of Manila.
The first bishop of San Sebastian was the Catalan ecclesiastic Jaime Font i Andreu, appointed to office on May 13, 1950, and took office on September 3 that year. With the need to choose a Donostiarra church to host the local diocese, the choice was, by its magnificence and modernity, the Church of the Good Shepherd.
The name ad catacumbas refers to the catacombs of St Sebastian, over which the church was built, while "fuori le mura" refers to the fact that the church is built outside the Aurelian Walls, and is used to differentiate the basilica from the church of San Sebastiano al Palatino on the Palatine Hill.
