Yorktown is located in southwestern DeWitt County at (28.983196, –97.502415 State Highways 72 and 119 intersect on the western side of town. Highway 72 leads northeast 16 miles (26 km) to Cuero and southwest 25 miles (40 km) to Kenedy, while Highway 119 leads northwest 35 miles (56 km) to Stockdale and south 24 miles (39 km) to Goliad.
On January 16, 1928, the section north of Yorktown was cancelled. [4] On February 24, 1930, it was extended south to Goliad State Park. [ 5 ] The route was completed by 1933, and on June 5, 1933 was proposed to be extended southward to Refugio . [ 6 ]
On March 17, 1924, it was extended southwest to Yorktown. [9] On December 21, 1926, it was extended to Karnes City. [10] On February 21, 1928, its south end was rerouted to Kenedy. On March 3, 1931, SH 72 Spur to Sweet Home was added, but was not part of the state highway system (it was added to the state highway system on March 16, 1937).

The route also crosses the York River between Gloucester and York counties at Yorktown on the George P. Coleman Memorial Bridge. Finally, US 17 traverses the Rappahannock River between Stafford and Spotsylvania counties at Fredericksburg as it overlaps I-95.
