Samuel Merritt (1822–1890) [1] was a physician and the 13th mayor of Oakland, California, from 1867 to 1869. [5] He was a founding Regent of the University of California , 1868-1874. He was also a shipmaster and a very successful businessman.
In 1867, Merritt donated to the city of Oakland the wetlands now known as Lake Merritt. Merritt left plans for a hospital and nursing school to be built in his name after his death; in 1909 Samuel Merritt College (still in operation as Samuel Merritt University and affiliated with Sutter Health) and Merritt Hospital opened. In 1958, the college was renamed Oakland City College. With the establishment of the Peralta Junior College District in 1964, Laney Institute, located on the current campus, and Merritt College became separate autonomous colleges in their present-day forms. The current campus was opened prior to the 1970-71 academic year.
