A Ka-50 provided cover for the landing of troops and then worked on the ground targets using its cannons and rockets. [20] India issued a request for proposal for 22 attack helicopters for the Indian Air Force in May 2008. [111] The Ka-50, the Mil Mi-28, and the Eurocopter Tiger were the front-runners for this order as of October 2008. [112]

The original specification called for a 2500 kg takeoff weight, but attempts to meet the required mixture of weapons, transport and survivability meant that the weight quickly climbed to 3400 kg. Meanwhile, Kamov had designed a more specialised platform in the 2200 kg range in the form of the Kamov V-60 which was favoured but not produced either.
The first V-80 prototype (Bort 010) left the Kamov Helicopter Plant in June 1982. On 17 June, for the first time, test pilot Nikolay Bezdetnov performed a hover in the V-80 and on 27 July the V-80 made its maiden circuit flight. [6] The V-80Sh-1 prototype version was the configuration used for the Ka-50 production version.
