It was named for Saint Patrick to represent Portsmouth's large Irish American population. [2] The school, whose former primary facility was built in 1904, [3] was part of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Manchester. [4] By 2013, when the school celebrated its 145th anniversary, it was the oldest private school in Portsmouth. [2]
The high school was soon renamed again as "Girls’ Catholic Central High School", and the grade school was renamed "St. Patrick’s Grade School"; both names stuck until the school was closed in 1969.
