Mujra is a dance performance by man/woman in a format that emerged during Mughal rule in India, where the elite class and local rulers like the nawabs of the Indian society (often connected to the Mughal emperor's court) used to frequent tawaifs (courtesans) for their entertainment.
A tawaif was a highly successful courtesan singer‚ dancer‚ and poet who catered to the nobility of the Indian subcontinent, particularly during the Mughal era. Many tawaifs ( nautch girls to the British) were forced to go into prostitution due to a lack of opportunities by the time of the British Raj .
Epigraphical records attest that courtesans who were well versed in 64 forms of arts were called Vaiseshikas, and many of whom have even donated their wealth to build temples. Courtesans who were proficient in dance were called the Raja Nartaki's or Royal Dancers and those who were highly proficient in music were given the title Asthana Vidhusi.
