Hammonasset Beach State Park is a public recreation area occupying two miles of beach front on Long Island Sound in the town of Madison, Connecticut. It is the state's largest shoreline park and one of the state's most popular attractions, drawing an estimated one million visitors annually. [ 3 ] [
All transportation to and from the island is by boat. There is no airstrip or bridge, and foot travel via Hammonasset is possible but difficult due to the salt marsh conditions. The closest port is Cedar Island Marina, approximately a quarter mile north. There are five roads on the island, forming a rough sideways "figure 8" pattern.

Killingworth was established from the area called Hammonasset, taken from the local Native American tribe of the same name. The area originally incorporated the area of the present town of Clinton , which was separated from Killingworth along ecclesiastical borders in 1838.
