The Newberry Correctional Facility is a state prison for men, owned and operated by the Michigan Department of Corrections. It is located in the eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan, on the south side of Newberry, in Luce County. [1] The facility was opened in 1996 and has a working capacity of 1108 prisoners, held at a medium security level.
The Detroit House of Corrections was transferred to the state in 1986, renamed to Western Wayne Correctional Facility, and became a women's facility for the rest of its tenure. It eventually closed in December 2004 and all inmates and staff were transferred to the Huron Valley Complex in Ypsilanti.

Newberry is surrounded by state and national forests and is considered the southern gateway to the Tahquamenon Falls area, which the other being Paradise to the northeast. Newberry was designated as "the Moose Capital of Michigan" by the state legislature. The Newberry Correctional Facility is located just south of the village.
