Spencer is a former logging town located near the intersection of Spencer Road and Golden Road. [5] It was a stop on the Pere Marquette Railway. The post office operated from 1898 to 1912. The town had a church, freight house, general store, grocery store, hotel, lumber yard, millinery, two sawmills, schoolhouse, shoe shop and tavern. [6]
The community itself also became known as Spencer Creek and was given a post office under that name on June 15, 1869. In 1891, the Pere Marquette Railway expanded into the area, and Spencer Creek was renamed Alden after railroad official William Alden Smith , who would later become a state politician.
