In 5e, dominate person applies the Charmed condition, and then also supplies an effect that reads “While the target is Charmed,” and calm emotions says it suppresses any effect that causes the target to be Charmed—which means that the “While the target is Charmed” clause is no longer met, so yes, 5e- calm emotions suppresses 5e ...
I hate to sound like a broken record, but again, the planetar looks almost exactly like a human, apart from size and skin tone. Would dominate monster effect it, or dominate person? This is probably an obvious question, but it's still confusing that a spell entitled "dominate monster" would also work on a potentially good-aligned humanoid creature.
First approximation: The higher spell slot level used would win. If both wizards cast it using the same spell slot level, then the one with the higher spell save DC would be the more potent. If those are a tie, then it's DM ruling; I'd probably rule the first one cast stays in effect, as the second one failed to beat it. – Phil Boncer.
A DM is free to allow this, but if a DM allows you to do that, dominate monster becomes essentially useless, as it sets a precedent for ignoring the order and just doing something else; expect dominated monsters to simply drop prone or drop their weapons to avoid following orders.
In the case of Dominate person without full control, I might require a wisdom save to pick the target initially, and might have the Dominated creature make the wisdom save with disadvantage to complete the attack (representing the extra layer of magical compulsion). 5e intentionally doesn't cover corner cases. There is more than one kind of game.
Dominate Person does the following things: It Charms the target. (Thus it cannot attack you or target you with harmful effects, and you have advantage on all checks to socially interact with it) For as long as the Charm lasts, and you both remain on the same plane of existence, it gives you a telepathic Link to the target. Canonically ...
Let's look at some of the details in the spell Dominate Person. You can use this telepathic link to issue commands to the creature while you are conscious (no action required), which it does its best to obey. You can specify a simple and general course of action, such as “Attack that creature,” “Run over there,” or “Fetch that object.”
And besides, dominate person doesn't say anything about there being telepathic communication from the target to the caster, only caster to target. In addition, the wording of the monster ability telepathy is different from telepathic link, suggesting that the nature of the link is specific to its source. \$\endgroup\$
Dominate person has 2 options, full control, or just providing an order. Full control is pretty clear: You can use your action to take total and precise control of the target. Until the end of your next turn, the creature takes only the actions you choose, and doesn't do anything that you don't allow it to do. During this time you can also ...
If the druid wildshapes into a beast, its type changes to match that beast. So, the druid is no longer a humanoid, the target of Dominate Person is invalid, and the spell ends. In this way, it works in reverse of the Dominate Beast spell. Dominate Monster works on any creature. Whether in beast form, humanoid form, or even in a Circle of the ...
