I had a few Clam houses (Bigfoot XL2000, Six Pack Mag 1550, Six Pack Mag 1660) and the quality of the Otter and service was far better. Without a Gander Warranty on my XL2000 I would have been up a creek.
My guess is they had them completely designed and it was a lawyer in the room that said, hey, lets add a red flag (so they can find your body) for liabilities sake. Flat light, light snow, and a white shelter is prime for disaster. I will not get in one period. Bearcat89. North branch, mn. Posts: 19936.
I went through this in the smaller sizes a year ago. I like the Otter x-over doors the best. Clam’s new doors are a close second and do like them better than the old front entry. Fabric, Otters may be a grade better but all are great. fwiw – I chose the Clam Nanook XL thermal but under different criteria.
December 4, 2014 at 2:21 pm #1480092. Had a Shappell 4000 about 15-18 years ago. It was light, 55 lbs, I think. It had flip up skis underneath which were nice for pulling. Easy to setup. I didn’t like it in the wind, needed to be anchored. The holes where a little tight if you were fishing deep water. Meaning the holes where pretty close ...
December 14, 2018 at 11:37 pm #1817944. I have not seen the clam hubs with a floor but I have a polar bird with the floor. Takes a little more time to set up but the advantages are worth it. You aren’t sitting in 2″ of water after a day of fishing. Also I rarely ever have to screw my fish house down. The weight of the floor holds the fish ...
Percentage of the proceeds goes to wounded warriors foundation. Lodge is a 4-5 person hub so probably more Like 4 person. Otter XTH Resort because it will reasonably fit everyone without it feeling tight inside, while not killing your wallet. Solid thermal with great storage and features.
January 23, 2013 at 3:56 pm #1133839. I’m thinking of buying a hub just for light-wind days when I take others fishing. I have an Otter Lodge but it would be nice to have something that is roomier and light. Even in the wind we had a couple of weeks ago my Otter was tipping and sliding on the ice.
Without a doubt, Otter makes the highest quality shelters but they are also a lot more expensive than other brands. They are built tough and built to last but out of the budget you stated. Frabill comes in 2nd in terms of overall quality and durability and then there’s a big gap, and then clam and eskimo are at about the same level.
Hey Ibupnort – I spent the money on the 5600 deluxe last year. I will start with a couple of the cons. 1) it is a bigger shack if you only plan on fishing by yourself. (could also be a pro ) 2) If your boots have a lot of snow or ice build up the floor can be a little slick. 3) One day the wind was blowing really hard and I took it out by myself.
