Location in Barnstable County and the state of Massachusetts. Dennis is a town in Barnstable County, Massachusetts, United States, located near the center of Cape Cod. As of the 2020 census, the population was 14,674. [1] The town encompasses five villages, each with its own post office.
In 1524, Italian navigator Giovanni da Verrazzano was the first European to discover Cape Cod Bay, his claim proved by a map of 1529 which clearly outlined Cape Cod. [2] In 1620, the Pilgrims first sheltered in Provincetown Harbor where they signed the Mayflower Compact, the first democratic document signed in the New World.

The Pilgrims did not refer to Plymouth Rock in any of their writings; the first known written reference to the rock dates from 1715 when it was described in the town boundary records as "a great rock".
