The image of the Divine Mercy is a depiction of Jesus Christ that is based on the Divine Mercy devotion initiated by Faustina Kowalska. According to Kowalska's diary, Jesus told her "I promise that the soul that will venerate this image will not perish. I also promise victory over enemies already here on earth, especially at the hour of death.
On Divine Mercy Sunday, 18 April 2004 under the care of Cardinal Audrys Bačkis, the church was restored, blessed, and given the title Shrine of the Divine Mercy. The church was adapted for the display of the original Image of Merciful Jesus, painted according to the vision of Saint Faustina Kowalska by artist Eugeniusz Kazimirowski in 1934.
Kazimirowski's Divine Mercy was first shown in public at the Easter ceremonies of 25–28 April 1934, and the first Mass with the Divine Mercy image was celebrated by Rev. Michael Sopoćko at the Gate of Dawn church in Vilnius, on 28 April 1935 the second Easter Sunday, long before the Vatican approved the term Divine Mercy Sunday in 2000. [3]
