Calvin is located in south-central Hughes County on the south side of the Canadian River. U.S. Route 75 passes just east of the town limits, leading north 19 miles (31 km) to Wetumka and south 32 miles (51 km) to Coalgate. U.S. Route 270 comes in with US 75 from the north but turns east at Calvin and leads 30 miles (48 km) to McAlester.

Upon landing on the north shore of the Canadian River, US-81 and SH-152 enter Canadian County. The first Canadian County town they encounter is Union City, where SH-152 turns east toward Oklahoma City. US-81 continues due north, passing from Union City into the Canadian County seat, El Reno, where it comes to an interchange with I-40/US-270.
Indianola is located on the south bank of the South Canadian River, approximately 18 miles (29 km) north of McAlester. [5] According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.3 square miles (0.78 km 2), all land. Indianola is 211 meters above sea level.
At the time of its founding, Canadian was located in Tobucksy County, Choctaw Nation, in the Indian Territory. [4] The settlement was originally called South Canadian, taking its name from the nearby South Fork of the Canadian River, now called Gaines Creek. A post office was established at South Canadian, Indian Territory on May 29, 1873.
