Jonathan Belcher was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts Bay, on 8 January 1681/82. [1] [2] [3] The fifth of seven children, his father Andrew was a merchant who was also one of the first slave traders in colonial New England, and his mother, Sarah (Gilbert) Belcher, was the daughter of a politically well connected Connecticut merchant and Indian trader.

Belcher was born on 2 August 1905 in Kensington, London, the son of John Thomas Belcher, a sometime postal worker, and his wife Lillie Harriett, née Garrard. After attending Brackenbury Road elementary school, at the age of 11 Belcher won a scholarship to Latymer Upper School, where he remained until 1921.
