Machali (Hindi for 'fish'; code name: T-16), [2] also known as Machli or Machhli, was a Bengal tigress who lived in Ranthambore National Park in India.She was born in the spring of 1996, [1] and died on 18 August 2016.
The Bengal tiger or Royal Bengal tiger is a population of the Panthera tigris tigris subspecies and the nominate tiger subspecies. It ranks among the biggest wild cats alive today. By 2018, it was expanded to fifty tiger reserves with nearly 72,749 km 2. of protected area which formed about 2.21% of India's total geographical area. The Zoological Survey of India has recorded a total of 753 species within the Guru Ghasidas-Tamor Pingla Tiger Reserve, comprising 365 invertebrates and 388 vertebrates.The invertebrate population is predominantly made up of insects, while the vertebrate population features 230 bird species and 55 mammal species, including several that are classified as threatened.
Kaziranga had a population of around 30 Bengal tigers during the 1972 census, which grew 187% to 86 in the 2000 census, distinguishing Kaziranga with one tiger for each five km 2 of park area, the highest tiger density in the world. Kaziranga formally became a tiger reserve in 2006. [7]
