Joslins Department Store began as J. Joslins Dry Goods Store, founded by John Jay Joslin in 1873; it was a direct competitor to The Denver Dry Goods Company which commenced operations in 1888. The original Joslin Dry Goods Company Building is on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, and is currently a Courtyard by Marriott property.
In 1994, Joslins Department Store constructed a $23 million, 160,000-square-foot (15,000 m 2) flagship store on the east side of the mall. In 1996, Southglenn sales slumped following the debut of Park Meadows , a Douglas County center with anchors Dillard's, Foley's, Nordstrom, and Joslins.

The shopping center is a triumph of mined land reclamation. In the 1920's Temple Buell bought a large parcel of land at First Avenue and University Boulevard. It was nothing but a weed-filled area. [2] Before the shopping center, sand was mined from a large pit. After it was mined out, the city used the pit as a sanitary landfill in the 1940s.
