Mackey was born on August 15, 1953, in Houston, Texas, the son of Margaret Wescott (Powell) and William Sturges "Bill" Mackey, Jr. [4] He has a sister and a brother.. John Mackey's father Bill was a professor of accounting, CEO of LifeMark, a health-care company, and investor of Whole Foods Market, before he died in 2004.
Mackey was born Sandra Sherman in Oklahoma City, the daughter of funeral directors Velt Sherman Verna Richie Sherman. [ 2 ] Mackey first earned a bachelor's degree in history from the University of Central Oklahoma , followed by an M.A. in International Affairs from the University of Virginia .

[1] Mackey died from heat prostration at his apartment in the Bristol Hotel on July 10, 1912. [7] He was buried in the Lancaster Rural Cemetery.
